Become a land-based surveyor

With generous support from the Manx Lottery Trust we are embarking on an exciting project entitled ‘The development of a network of local marine mammal surveyors’.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals from all across the island to carry out surveys of whales, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks from the coastline. Training will be given free of charge by marine mammal scientists living on the island (that’s us) in the form of a half day indoor workshop. You will learn all about our local species and how to identify them, the importance of scientific data collection and how to conduct a land-based survey. You will receive a free land-based survey pack including a compass, ID guide and appropriate forms.

Once trained, volunteer surveyors will be expected to conduct land-based surveys under their own accord, with full support from Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch.
